Rosa Parks Curriculum

Art, music and physical education are important contributors in developing the “whole child”. Students attend these classes on a three day rotation schedule.

Rosa Parks Elementary and its classrooms are focused on developing and supporting a learning community through the District's Character Counts Program and Keystone Curriculum. Rosa Parks strives to promote a culture of respect for diversity and positive character development in a climate that is safe and encouraging. 

The six traits that are emphasized are Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Fairness and Citizenship.  Students are awarded by their peers at our monthly Character Counts Assemblies. 

Rosa Parks under the direction of a qualified English Learners instructor, participate in small group instruction that focuses on specific skills instruction and content curriculum.

Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented services are provided to identified students as well as integrated enrichment opportunities for all students.

Native American

Native American students are eligible to receive academic support and to participate in cultural enrichment opportunities.

The Extended Day Program (EDP) provides safe, alternative educational child care, enhancing the child’s extended day. Recognizing the busy lifestyles of today’s family, the district attempts to work in partnership with home and parents by providing before and after school supervision at the school site.

Union Intramural Sports provides Union students opportunities to participate in athletics at a recreational level in flag football, basketball, and volleyball.

Balanced Literacy is a research-based approach that provides students a wide variety of ways in which they will become skilled readers and writers. Children are exposed to a strong reading mentor who instructs on skills, strategies, and discussions about reading. Students engage in high volumes of text that will require high levels of comprehension.

Mastering this will then allow students to move to more complex texts. Balanced Literacy is greatly enriched through the use of the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model. This is a scaffolding instructional approach modeled first by the teacher (I do), next students practice through active engagement (we do), which is further practiced in a partnership (2 do), followed by independent practice (you do) of the focus skill or strategy.

Students learn science through hands-on exploration and scientific investigation with our curriculums Discovery and Project Lead the Way. 

We focus largely on incorporating STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Students enhance their technology skills as they access Project Lead the Way resources through iPads.

Special Services provides a Learning Lab environment for special education students and for students needing speech and language or physical and occupational therapy. A school psychologist is available to administer assessments to identify students in need of individual education plans.

A full-time reading teacher is on staff to differentiate instruction for remedial readers and to serve as our school testing coordinator. We are fortunate to have a full-time nurse assigned to our building. She administers medications and screens students’ abilities in vision and hearing.

Technology is incorporated as an integral part of each elementary classroom. Classrooms and labs have Internet access. Up-to-date hardware and software ensure that students benefit from technology resources.

The media center supports the total academic program through extensive collections of materials for students’ use. The science lab offers students inquiry-based science instruction endorsed by the National Science Foundation and designed to ensure students master national science standards.

Social sciences are also integrated into the curriculum as well as inquiry-based math instruction designed to ensure students maintain national math standards.

TCI is utilized by K-5th Grade.
